About
I am a backend developer. For the last several years I have worked on services that move data from one place to another and try not to lose any of it on the way. This site is where I keep the notes I would otherwise forget.
The posts are short on purpose. Most of them started as a message to a colleague, a page in a paper notebook, or an answer I gave twice and decided to write down once.
What you will find here
Mostly practical writing about backend work: queues, databases, deployment, and the unglamorous tooling around them. I try to describe what actually happened, including the parts where I was wrong.
What you will not find
Benchmarks without context, hot takes about languages, or advice that only works for companies with a thousand engineers.

Software is mostly the art of keeping a few simple things simple while everything around them keeps changing.
